A Brief History Of Doctors With A Heart

Doctors With A Heart, Inc. (DWAH) was founded as a non-profit organization in the
1980’s by Dr. Duane Schmidt. Since then, DWAH has become what may be the largest
doctor charity in the world.

Dr. Schmidt, an Iowa dentist, saw the need for physicians in the healing arts
(chiropractors, medical doctors, osteopaths, dentists, and other professionals) to donate
their services and contribute directly to the communities in which they practiced. He
clearly saw this as a way to give something back to the community.

Valentine’s Day, February 14th, or one day in that same week, was designated Doctors
With A Heart Day. The doors to the participating doctors’ offices are opened to those
members of the community who had a recognizable need for the doctors’ services –
To date, over tens of thousands of doctors have become members of this national and
international charity by donating the gift of health and in some cases the gift of life.

The DWAH program has been recognized and applauded by the national media and news
organizations to include:
* The Associated Press (AP)
* National Public Radio (NPR)
* USA TODAY
* United Press International (UPI)

And by such notable people and organizations as:
* President Ronald Reagan
* Leo F. Buscaglia
* Pope John Paul
* The Canadian Government

The spirit of community, humanity and volunteerism are alive and well in the ideals and
actions of the doctors who participate in the Doctors With A Heart program.
